Insight: People get bored waiting at the airport before their flight. 

Big Idea: Transform airport waiting time into the start of your adventure.

When are we most eager to learn a new language? When we’re going on a dream vacation — traveling to another country and excited to immerse ourselves in another culture. Duolingo is making that possible by encouraging people to learn basic phrases when it matters most, at the airport right before the trip. And what better way to learn than by practicing with a native speaker? So, we’re connecting people around the world through a digital billboards in major airports, and using AI to ensure accuracy. Duolingo believes the best way to prepare for a new adventure isn’t just packing your bags—it’s learning to say hello when you land.

When not activated by users, the digital billboards will shuffle through livestreams of the other airports as people walk by. 

After someone approaches the billboard and clicks “Join the conversation.” the screen will switch and the user will prompted to select their final destination. Let’s use Italy.

Duolingo will connect the user to someone at the airport in Italy. Once connected, the pair be prompted to practice their language learning skills in a series of listening and speaking exercises with Duolingo’s top 10 travel phrases. 

Listening exercises will allow users to become familiar with native accents and comprehension.

As users are taken through a series of exercises, AI will be used to assess pronunciation and provide alternative correct responses.

After completing the 10 phrases, participants will wave goodbye.

We’ll wish viewers a good trip in the language they are learning and prompt users to download the mobile app (via the QR code) to continue learning the language.
